Omega Tower Design Partners
(June 1999 - Present)
Overview
Omega Tower Design Partners is a long-running independent design and software practice that I have maintained since 1999. It serves as a personal and technical home for exploring ideas, building tools, and publishing systems that benefit from being owned, operated, and evolved over time.
Rather than functioning as a traditional consultancy, Omega Tower exists as a stable platform for long-lived work: data formats, utilities, reference sites, and small systems designed to be clear, durable, and maintainable.
What Omega Tower is
Today, Omega Tower primarily functions as:
- A publishing platform for technical and reference material
- A home for data format definitions and schema work
- A place to build and operate small, focused web services and tools
- A vehicle for long-term projects that benefit from continuity of ownership
Most work under Omega Tower is designed, implemented, operated, and maintained directly by me, often over many years.
Areas of focus
Data formats and schema
A recurring focus of Omega Tower is making structured data easier to describe, validate, and reason about over time.
Representative work includes:
-
Concise Logically Organized Data (CLOD)
A usage-agnostic method to describe datasets. -
Text File Schema
A method to formally describe structured text files.
These projects emphasize clarity, explicit structure, and long-term usefulness over tooling or implementation detail.
Tools and small systems
Omega Tower also hosts a variety of small tools and services built to solve specific, recurring problems. These systems tend to be narrowly scoped, intentionally simple, and designed to operate reliably with minimal ongoing intervention.
Examples include:
-
Toolbox Resources
API-oriented resources used for testing, training, and validating integration software. -
Weather API
A service that retrieves and formats weather observations for straightforward consumption. -
Railroad Diagram Generator
A tool for visualizing formal grammars as SVG railroad diagrams.
Personal and organizational sites
Over time, Omega Tower has also served as the technical home for personal, project, and organizational websites that prioritize longevity, direct ownership, and minimal dependency on external platforms.
These sites are treated as systems with lifecycles rather than as one-off deliverables.
Relationship to my professional work
The work published under Omega Tower complements, rather than replaces, my professional focus in warehousing and logistics systems. Many of the same priorities apply: clarity, observability, restraint, and respect for operational reality.
Omega Tower provides space to explore those ideas more directly, without the scale or organizational constraints of enterprise environments.
This page describes an ongoing personal practice. Individual tools, projects, and sites are documented elsewhere in the Design and Side Projects sections.
